Amsterdam

The largest mobile ice-skating rink of the Netherlands is located in Amsterdam on the Museumplein. The Old-South quarter has had the ice-skating rink in the city centre since 2000 following in the footsteps of the well-known ice-skating rink in Central Park (New York). Swedice is responsible for the construction, installation and maintenance.

Tourist puller

Each year at the start of December to the end of February the ice-skating rink attracts around 100,000 visitors. Many young people from Amsterdam and tourists come to know the charm of this very Dutch skating sport. They go around in circles just a skating distance away from the Night Watch of Rembrandt van Rijn (at the Rijksmuseum) and the sunflowers of Vincent van Gogh (at the Van Gogh Museum) and it is, moreover, free of charge from sunrise to sunset. In short, perfect city marketing!

Technical tour de force

The ice-skating rink on the Museumplein is not just unique due to the location but it is characterised by very special technical permanent cooling technologies built in the cellar under the square.
The cooling of the computer-driven plant room is provided by water from the canals. A GSM modem system linked to Swedice is used so that breakdowns and faults are immediately followed up.

You are even allowed to skate on racing skates due to the size of the rink. Made to size for this location, oval to follow the shape of the pond: 17×80 metres. The specific white mat system of Swedice stands out thanks to its flexible shape, size and length. White matting ensures there is a white ice subfloor, resulting in less absorption of sunlight so that the cold element can be better retained.

Maintenance

The deployment of a professional ice resurfacing machine; daily maintenance under the supervision of Swedice. Swedice has been involved in the installation, maintenance of the system and the additional facilities such as the first aid post and toilets. Swedice acts as the supervisor during the whole year while maintaining good consultation channels open with the Old-South quarter. Facilitating on a reoccurring basis each year including maintenance in the summer and logistics and storage.
